EDGE Centers Executive Director resigned as of February 14, 2011 due to family priorities.

The Center will close it's doors at 241 W Ave A, Belle Glade, FL as of February 28, 2011.

The current Board of Directors, Betty Boyer, Dr. James A Klaber, Paul Skyers and Derrek Moore want to thank all of the Supporters (see previous blog entry)of the EDGE programs that made it possible for new businesses and jobs to be created in the Glades.

The EDGE Center served the needs of the Glades Residents and small business owners in the Glades from 1997 til 2011.

The EDGE staff is looking for volunteers to assist in planning a Women Business Owners conference that will be held in April 2011. This conference will give Women Business Owners in the Glades a chance to participate in a strategic plan for business development in the Glades Region (Belle Glade, Canal Point, Clewiston, Moore Haven, Pahokee, and South Bay), as well as an opportunity to showcase their business and products.

The first organizational workshop will take place on October 21st, at 10AM at the
Palm Beach State College Belle Glade Campus.

Here's a few of the most common mistakes business owners typically make in trying hard to grow their business. Do any of these look familiar? We will help you fix these problems and restore the dream that lead you to open your business in the first place.

Competing on price or being “the low price leader”. Small and mid-cap businesses can't compete in this arena, so why are you competing by the “big boxes” rules? Do you compete by their rules in other areas, too?

Filling the role of Master Technician in your business, while the CEO slot you're supposed to be occupying is empty. Is no detail too small for you check on? Do you have to approve EVERY decision? Is everything reviewed on a case-by-case basis in your organization? If so, you're functioning as an over-controlling master technician, instead of an effectively delegating CEO.

Cutting out all marketing effort and budget in an economic downturn. Marketing is everything you do to tell your target market about how you can help them. . .and how to contact you to get that help! If you cut out all marketing effort to save money in a recession, then you've just stopped sending your message out! What happens to your bottom line when new customers can't find you and established customers slowly stop coming back?

Not knowing the basic elements of how to effectively market your business. Effective marketing means telling everyone in your target market how you can help them. So, marketing doesn't cost, it pays! Are you one of those making the huge mistake of running a yellow pages ad, hanging a sign on the door, then waiting for enough customers to find you?

Spending huge sums of money and time on marketing seminars. . .and then tucking all that great information into a file drawer, never implementing what you've learned. Not using marketing dollars wisely. You don't have a business growth marketing plan of your own, so you get drawn into every marketing rep's sales pitch for their form of advertising. But your poor ad response means you're just putting dollars in the marketing rep's pockets. . . not yours!

Continuing the same fruitless behaviors over and over. . .and expecting a different result! Many business owners don't know what to do or where to turn when their (or their advertising rep's) strategies don't work. So, they continue to pay for the same fruitless strategies over and over again. Does this sound like you?

How to Maintain Sales Revenue in the Great Recession

The goal of every business is to maintain net income during the Great Recession. Yet, that goal may seem impossible to achieve when your patrons are spending less, in general, and cutting back on discretionary spending, in particular. What Marketing and sales strategy should you use to maintain, or even increase, your net income during the current economic contraction?

Sales are not down everywhere

First, let’s dispel the notion that business sales are down in every category and market. Even in the hard-hit-hospitality industry, venerable McDonald’s actually saw an overall sales increase in 2009. So let’s explore what sets those businesses that can increase sales in this economy apart from others that are floundering.

Get into your patrons’ heads

Any successful marketing or sales strategy depends on understanding how your patrons (your customers, clients, or patients) in your target market think. So crafting a successful sales strategy for our current economic situation must start with understanding what your target patrons are thinking under these conditions.

Most patrons (and small and mid-size businesses) currently have an outlook best described as siege mentality. They’re listening to the bad news of the highest unemployment levels in more than a quarter-century, the actions banks are taking that further restrict credit and seeing the effects of the downturn on their friends, patrons and colleagues.

How patrons behave in a recession

Personally, your patrons may fear the imminent loss of their jobs, may be working fewer hours or may have had their limits recently lowered or interest rates raised on their credit cards.

In response to these internal and external pressures, consumers typically begin hoarding cash, cutting back on discretionary purchases (ranging from entertainment to regular dental examinations) and reducing the dollar amount spent to buy necessities (such as buying a half tank of gas instead of filling up).

Even if some of your patrons are not personally affected, they will usually avoid conspicuous consumption and high-dollar purchases to avoid alienating their peer group during tough economic times.

So the key to maintaining your sales revenue and profitability during the economic downturn is understanding what your patrons are thinking, how that thinking changes their buying behavior and adjusting your marketing strategy to meet their new needs accordingly.

Next time, I’ll share how to use your new insight to create some recession-busting business strategies that will help you maintain, and even grow, your sales in the Great Recession.

Community Events Committee planning Annual “Glades Corny Fest” Oct 30&31

Historical Avenue A between 200 and 300 Blocks.

The Community Events Committee was formed on September 9,2009 and have been working very quickly to put together this years first community event.

This event will take place on Oct 30 & 31 on Historical Avenue A between the 200 and 300 block. From 10AM-7PM.

Plans are for 40 booths with local arts, crafts, and food. Local non-profit organizations are invited to inform and raise funds for their projects.

The Mariachi Mexico International Band will be performing as well as local step dancer teams. King Samuel Sounds will DJ the event.

There will be contests for all age groups.

Kids 7-15 can enter the “Draw the Muck Monster” contest 1st prize will be $100 dollars all participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Ages 7-12, 13-17, 18-? Corny Costume Contest – 1st place prize per category will be $100 2nd place will be $50

Ages 15-30 Corn Eating Contest 1st Place $100 2nd Place $50

Ages 30-? Cornbread recipe contest $1place $100

All ages Step Dancers competition 1place $100

All Booths will be judged for design and content. 1st place winner will be given free advertising for a year on the EDGE website.

New Board Officers

The EDGE is very sad to say good-bye to two icons at the EDGE Center. Mr. Douglas Green and Reggie O'Connor.

Mr. Green and Mr. O'Connor have served on the EDGE Centers board since 1997. Their contributions to the growth of the EDGE is innumerable. We won't be able to replace their contributions to the Glades but we hope that we can build on them.

Three other board members have stepped up to fill their positions as secretary and treasurer on the board as well as an open position for vice chairperson.

Dr. James Klaber who has served as a volunteer mentor for the EDGE Center since 2006. He has helped organize workshops and numerous other training opportunities. He is the instructor for Path to Success program that is a fast track course that prepares a startup business for entry into the EDGE Center's Incubation program. Path to Success Courses are 8 week courses twice a week for 3 hours. The course teaches how to write your business plan, how to obtain financing, how to develop an agressive marketing plan. It also gives the clients the opportunity to test the feasibility of their ideas. He previously served as the incubator manager for the TED Center in Delray until he retired last April.

Mr. Paul Skyer- has served as a mentor for the EDGE for several years. He is the Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Resource Center in Riviera. He has assisted with many of our minority clients and enterprise zone applications.

Mr. Derrek Moore- has served as a member on the board since Jan 2009. He is currently the finance director for the City of Pahokee. Mr. Moore's financial guidance has kept the EDGE Center on track.

Raising funds for renovations

We are raising funds for the renovation of the Historical Belle Glade City Hall on Avenue A. This project started in April 2008 and due to the economy has had very slow progress because of the shortage of funding. We are prepared for a grant to pay for the majority of the work and now we need to raise the matching funds.

When you give $150 you will receive: a personally engraved 4x8 paver brick that will be placed in the walk way to the Historical Belle Glade Community Center and 2 dinner tickets to the August 6th Youth Entrepreneur Success Gala.

When you give $250 you will receive: a years business membership in the EDGE Centers partnership link program and an 8x8 engraved paver brick for your business, that will be placed in the walk way to the Historical Belle Glade Community Center and 2 VIP dinner tickets to the August 6th Youth Entrepreneur Success Gala.

Mia King turns 21

Mia and class mates celebrates with a cup cake for her 21st birthday at the EDGE Center Youth Entrepreneur Success (YES) training classes. Students are preparing to raise $50,000 to fund the EDGE Center training programs and to contribute to the remodeling of the Historical Belle Glade City Hall that will be used as a community incubation center. 30 students are currently learning how to raise funds using the state of the art high tech tools and techniques. Students are using proven technology to develop an online auction and are teaching business owners and individuals how to use their computers to market their products while contributing to their community.

Youth Entrepreneur Success Orientation/Registration Workshop

This workshop is for youth ages 18-24and potential sponsors to learn about the upcoming 8 week summer Youth training program that will start on June 16th-Aug 16.

The program will teach students how to organize their lives, manage their time and money, and start a technological business.

Student will have a chance to earn: a new laptop computer, win a educational scholarship, a certificate of competency, continue developing a new business, social networking and cash.

Sponsors will benefit from advertising their businesses, community recognition, learning about new technology, and meeting potential new employees and clients.

Attendance at one of these meetings is mandatory for attendance to the classes.

Pamela J. Patterson owner of Community Arts and Crafts, Inc will exhibit her art at this months Business Social that will be held at the EDGE Center.

Community Art and Crafts, Inc. is a company devoted to promoting communities through artistic events. They develop and implement programs and events that uplift, inspire and promote. They work with communities that have been traumatized by natural or human disasters to restore a sense of pride and hope.

The programs that are offered are used to bring communities together to create without expectations. We want communities to have a chance to lose themselves in something that is not only fun but inspirational. It is important that a community that is going through a difficult time realizes that this too shall pass.

Community Art and Crafts, Inc. is a company born of a need to brighten the outlook of those who need it most. We strive to inspire and promote communities through the visual arts.

There are many ways to start a business. Here's the way we recommend. It's called the "Business Overview." It's quicker and easier than the business plan, yet still outlines the essentials while avoiding "business plan paralysis" which keeps a goodly number of great ideas from ever getting started.

THE OVERVIEW

#1. Start with a MISSION STATEMENT. This describes the business. What you do. Why it's done. What makes your business unique. Clue: Is it something better, cheaper, faster? Why a customer/client wants to do business with you. The benefit to the consumer. Your statement becomes a guide for the direction and decisions you make regarding your business and the future of your company. Clue: Avoid general statements like "We give good service." Instead, use specific statements like "We train our staff in the latest customer service methods."

#2. Follow with a STATEMENT OF PURPOSE. This describes your vision; in essence, a description of your business when it has reached its full potential. Project a time 5 years into the future.Include things like revenue, number of staff or personnel, location of office(s), activities, reputation, recognition, plus your lifestyle, perks, benefits and outside interests. Don't hold back. Be willing to dream.

#3. Follow with a POSITION REVIEW. Where you are with your business idea at this moment in time. Include things like how much money you have to start your business; how much money you will have available each month to invest in your business until it starts making a profit; the source of future capital: friends, relatives, loans, investors. What you see as the next step(s) in the development of your business. How you plan to accomplish the next step(s). Clue: What assistance are you likely to need for your business?

#4. Follow with a BIOGRAPHY of yourself and partners, if any. Include particulars about experience relating to your business and any talents, skills and attributes you have that you may not be using. Be willing to be immodest, List your strengths and weaknesses. Clue: Include areas where you think you might need assistance in owning and operating a business.

The plan will be presented to the Palm Beach County Commission to assist with planning and financing of new infrastructure (streets, lighting, sewers, bridges, sidewalks, parks, recreation, street scape's) in Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay and Canal Point.
For many years the people of the Glades have complained that they didn't get their fair share of County financing to make the improvements needed to encourage economic development. Business Loan Fund Partners with Incubators

The Business Loan Fund of the Palm Beaches has partnered with the Palm Beach County Business Incubator programs to assist in providing funding for expanded business education programs.

The four incubation organizations consists of the EDGE Center, Inc in Belle Glade, The TED Center in Delray, The BEDR in Rivera, and BRIC in North Lake.

The programs will offer coordinated training programs for startup and expanding business owners in areas of business planning marketing and financing.
The plan is to leverage the abilities of the Loan Fund with the Incubators expertise to obtain more grant funding for the programs so that more secure businesses and jobs will be created.

The initial training program will begin in Riviera where BEDR and the BRIC staff members will provide the talent for this program . The program is being particially funded by a grant from the Quantum Grant Fund and Palm Beach County Economic Development Office.

The program is offered in areas of economic concern to skilled and motivated individuals who think they want to start or expand a business. The times, dates and curriculum will be announced soon. Be sure to signup for notification.

At the May 5 Glades Initiative Community Service Awards banquet Betty Boyer, Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the EDGE Center was awarded the Community Service Award for her contributions to the residents and businesses of Western Palm Beach County.

Betty married Bill Boyer 42 years ago and has 3 children 7 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Together Betty and Bill own and operate a field grown tree farm called Plant and Grow Nursery, Inc.
Some of Betty's prouds contributions include:

Her 11 years of service as a Board member of the EDGE Center a non-profit business incubator since 1997.
As a guardian ad litem for 17 years she was awarded the guardian of the year award from the Florida Dept of Law Enforcement. She is currently on the Citizens for National Security Task force.
She has served faithfully as a member of NAACP, Republican Executive Committee district 100, Past President of American Legion Aux Post 161 south Bay, Past President south Bay Crime Watch, past disaster chairperson for the American Red Cross, Member of the Board of Adjustment in South Bay, past Chairman for the South Bay Beautification committee, A member of the Cuban American club, partnership for neighborhood initiative, Belle Glade chamber of Commerce, First woman member of the Belle Glade Elks Lodge, BG Boat Lock Committee and procurement committee, Belle Glade Zoning Board member of the Belle Glade Garden Club, member of the BG Weed and Seed program, Past Citizen on Patrol for Belle Glade, Past crime watch Belle Glade, Member of the Arthur R. On March 18th at the Belle Glade Quarterly Town Meeting, City Manager Bill Underwood announced the 2008 Business of the Year and the 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year. The nominees were selected based on their community contributions and the economic development contributions to the City of Belle Glade during the 2007 year.

The '2008 Business of the Year' goes to Lake Welding Supplies, Inc, a family owned corporation who has served Western Glades County for the past 49 years. The Company provides 10 full time jobs that include benefits and most of the employees have served the company continuously. In 2007 the company upgraded their facilities and added computerization and online marketing via their website at www.lakeweldingsupplies.com. They also donated $13,000 to the County to be used for local Community projects.

The '2008 Entrepreneur of the Year' goes to Betty Nelson and Shirley Walters owners of Little Hands Learning Center and Plaza. Their business was started in 2002 under the management of Willy Lawrence who created a plan to develop the organization as it grew. After only 4 years they had outgrown the rental facility on 1st street and the opportunity to purchase the old KFC shopping plaza became available. With the financial assistance of the Doc Hill Foundation, a County Regions Grant, paint from the Solid Waste Authority, and a lot of hard work and personal investment the dream has finally become reality.

The Little Hands Learning Center and 4 other new startup businesses in the Plaza have created 66 new jobs in Belle Glade Community. The best part is that is has only taken 8 months to make this dream a reality.

The EDGE Center Board is proud to be a partner in the success of these committed organizations and have donated a 12x12 Engraved Marble Brick to be placed on the Wall of Fame in the new EDGE Innovation Center that will be completed by 12/2009.

EDGE Business Innovation Center

The EDGE Board of Directors have entered into a contract with the City of Belle Glade to continue the renovation of the Old Town Center on Avenue A.

After renovation the Center will be used by the EDGE Innovation and Historical Exhibit Center to provide an incubation facility for new cultural and technological startup businesses and as a nature center and museum.

The project will be funded with a State of Florida Cultural Grant, and numerous other Grants as well as local donations.

The project is benchmarked for 1st floor completion by December 2008.

The contractor Benny Richmond, Ins was chosen for this project. Richmond Inc. is a family based contractor who has served the Glades area for more than 50 years and remembers the historical Ave A district when it was all that there was in down town Belle Glade.

The EDGE has a program for age 15-21 year olds who are interested in learning how to start a business.

The program is offered FREE to motivated students who have a dream of starting a business. The program is funded by business sponsors.

After completion of only a short computerized one on one program students meet with mentors and counselors who will give guidance of what path students will need to follow to achieve their dreams.

Students will receive a certificate that will be honored by local high schools and PBCC for continuing education credits and as credit toward scholarships.

In addition students will be have the opportunity to apply to the EDGE Centers new Micro-loan program for assistance to start their business.

The REAL EDGE Graduates 11 Adults with a Dream

On June 26,2007 the first REAL class enjoyed dinner at the EDGE and each participant that attended at least 7 of the 8 classes received a certificate of completion.

The dinner was catered by member Charl0tte White from the ELK LODGE Cafe. The dinner included salad, garlic bread, fried chicken wings, and homemade lasanga and was completed by Charlotte's homemade banana pudding.

Many of the students enjoyed the class because they learned more about how the REAL business world functions and what is expected. Many came away with the desire to take the next step of getting started in their new business.

Instructor Jim Lilly from FAU SBDC and Fred Goodwin from Naples Workforce Alliance presented certificates and encouraged students to continue to follow their dreams.

The next class starts on Sept 6, 2007 at 6PM register early, the classes are limited to 16 participants.

The REAL Road to Business Success

The EDGE Center in a team effort with the Florida Small Business Development Center Network and the Florida Atlantic University are excited to offer the business community of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay with a unique 'active learning' program for individuals interested in starting or expanding a small business in rural areas of southern Florida.

Participants in this comprehensive, hands-on course will learn to:

identify and develop necessary business skills
search and locate small business opportunities in the community
prepare a winning business plan ( including a marketing plan and financial projections)

A Community Support Team of local professionals, bankers, attorneys, and CPA's will participate in the Course. Participant who complete this course with a minimum of 7 classes attended out of 8 with receive a certificate of continuing education credits.

This course will begin on May 3, at 6-9PM and will be offered every Thursday evening or 8 weeks. This course is open to the first 15 people to register.

EDGE Launches ONLINE Auction May 1,2007

The Board of Directors(Betty Boyer, Douglas Green, Reggie O'Connor, Mary Lee Hickson, Samantha Murray, Liz Cayson) and Suzanne Harper, Executive Director at the EDGE Center, a non-profit business resource center in Belle Glade, Florida have developed a new community project and are blazing new paths for fund raising in the Glades to make the project a success.

The project is called the Youth Entrepreneur Success program or Y.E.S. for short.

The program is designed as an after school program for age 15 and older, high school or pre-college students. The program will be offered as and addition to the Life Strategies course at PBCC in conjunction with duel enrollment with Glades Central High School. The program gives students direction on what they will need to do to become successful as a business owner and what courses they will need to pursue. The additional benefit of this program will be to help decrease the drop out rate in Western Palm Beach County and to give our children hope.

The program consists of four business categories: Small Business and you, Business Planning, Marketing and Pricing, Finances and Cash Flow Projections will be studied using a computerized program that tests and after completion of the 20 hour course a certificate will be issued that will be honored toward scholarships. In addition the EDGE Center will introduce mentors to assist the exceptional and self motivated students to start a business of their own.

The program will be held at the EDGE Center facilities at 241 W Ave A. The facility is currently only able to assist 10 students a week. Each student will be allowed to progress at their own pace and will be assisted with computer skills and reading comprehension.

To make this project a Success The EDGE needs to raise $2,000,000 over the next four years. to build a new incubator facility in Western Palm Beach County to house the new businesses that will be created because of the Y.E.S. program. The 10 new businesses will employ a minimum of 50 employees. Which in turn will create 25 additional jobs in the community. In addition the funds will also be used to buy equipment and pay for the programing that will be used in the program. Only 10% will be used for administration.

How are we going to raise the funds needed to fund this project?
From 2007-2010 we will hold 3 online auctions a year with the last auction ending at the Annual Entrepreneur of the Years Banquet. The Auctions will be in May, Oct, and Jan ending on FEB 7 annually. The Schedule will be published on the blog and sent out by email.

The Banquet will be a rewarding and motivational event for all that participate in this project.

These Auctions are going to last 30 days and will be marketed via newspaper, radio, TV, Flyer's, Email, Snail Mail, Websites, Blogs, Forums, and word of mouth.

This is a win-win project because when you participate by donating to this cause you don't only help the community you help yourself as well.

How can you be a part of this very beneficial project?

If you own a business you could donate a service (example-offer to clean a house for a month, provide lawn mowing for a month) if you are a retailer you could donate a shopping spree, or dinner for 10, or a weeks vacation, or you can sponsor an item that is in our catalog. You can also donate cash or antiques, or overstocked inventory. We also have sponsorship spots on the front page of the Auction available.
Just remember all donations are deductible from your tax returns.
